Keeping Your Basement Dry
Keep your basement dry by taking preventive actions. All you need are the following materials which you can buy in your friendly local hardware store:
- caulk and caulking gun
- waterproof paint
- paintbrushes
- sump pump
If you are not familiar with them, I’m sure the store assistants will not hesitate to offer their expert opinion. Better yet, you can consult an established waterproofing contractor. They will be able to determine if you need serious remediation measures.
First, make sure that your yard is graded appropriately. It should direct water to a drainage area. Inspect the ground alongside the foundation. Be sure that it is sloped away from the house so that the water does not flow direct to your home.
Always keep the gutters clean. Clear them off obstructions such as leaves and dirt. This will ensure that water won’t get clogged in which will seep through to your foundation.
Inspect the basement windows and doors. Cault any openings and cracks. Next, paint the walls with waterproof paint. If you can, install a sump pump with an automatic switch.
