How to Prevent Your Children from Being TV Addicts

March 13, 2009 | In: Family, Home, Parenting

televisionTelevision addiction among young children is a very common problem. But this can be prevented if you, parents, are vigilant about your youngsters’ viewing habits. Here are some tips:

Even if it isn’t convenient, allow only one television in the house. Or at least, be adamant in not allowing television sets inside your kids’ rooms. These can be very distracting to them as it would be easier for them to stay in their rooms and glue their faces in front of their television sets.

Instead of using the television as a babysitter, why not include your children in doing the household chores? Give them small chores to do themselves, like arranging magazines by color. You can also give them dust rags so they can join in the cleaning. This way you cannot be accused of leaving your kids in the hands of the television, but you also get to train them in household chores as early as now.

Another alternative is to have the older children watch their younger siblings (pay them if you have to).

Schedule TV time. This may seem unfair to them but if you explain why they are only allowed to watch certain programs at a particular period of time, they will eventually understand. It is also important for you to be with them when they are viewing. This way, you not only get to screen what they watch, but you can be there to explain several aspects of the program they are watching if needed.

Get your kids engaged in other activities. Enroll them in music or dance lessons. Let them join sports clubs. If they enjoy crafts, buy them materials. Arrange play dates with other parents. The important thing is that they get busy enough not to stay at home and watch all day long.

Introduce your kids to books. Reading books are a good alternative to watching television. Start by going to a bookstore with them so they can choose the ones they want. You can read along with them as part of their bedtime ritual.

Lead by example. They won’t obey you if they see you being couch potatoes yourselves.
