How to Properly Encourage Your Children in Sports

June 14, 2010 | In: Parenting

If your kids are interested in sports, here are some tips on how to encourage your children without pushing them too far:

You’re not a sports commentator and a game analyst so try to avoid giving your children the finer aspects of the game. Limit to praises and encouragement. If you have criticisms, make sure that they are constructive and that they are said in a positive manner. Leave it at that and do not nag.

Even if you’re not inclined in sports, make sure that you show that you’re also doing your best in whatever you do. After all, one must always practice what one preaches. Seeing this, your child will not only strive to do his best in sports but in other aspects of his young life as well.

Even if you are a frustrated athlete or a great one, do not force your dreams (and/or frustrations, former achievements) on your children. Let your children enjoy their time playing.

If your kid stops playing, discuss this with your child. Make sure that both of you have explored the issue thoroughly. If the best option for your child is to quit, then accept this and act as your child’s main support.
