When You Are Denied a Pay Raise
You felt that you did a fine job at work for the past year or so. You think it’s high time that you ask for a raise since you deserve it.However you are astounded when you find out later on that you did not get that raise or promotion. What do you do?
If the refusal is because of economic reasons, then be more understanding. Be thankful that you still have a job are still getting pay.
Try to get past the “no” and keep your cool. Listen and analyze the reasons why your boss denied you your request. If the no is because of your performance, ask to have your performance review explained to you. Be objective about the criticisms and note them down.
Review your work as well and with an objective eye, try to find out which mistakes you have made or if there were better ways of doing things you could have done.
If you concede that you really do need points for improvement, discuss these points with your boss and see if you can come up with a new strategy for getting the next promotion or raise.
If after you have reviewed all considerations and you still feel that management has been unfair with their decision, build up your case. Ask for an appointment with your boss or supervisor and politely lay down all facts.
Never resign in haste. Mull over it, especially with the current economic conditions. If you feel that you are better off elsewhere, update your resume and start preparations to leave. Finish all your assignments and make sure that you leave the company in a cordial manner. You might need to ask for reference from them and it would be awkward to do so if you left in a huff.
