Do you have lots of information to read and have little time do do it? Here are some tipz on how to improve your skimming skills and get the information you need at a glance:

Learn to discern and prioritize reading materials. Reserve the most difficult and critical works when you are alert and when you have more time. This way you can just skim through the less important materials.

Take a bit of time to read the synopsis and the table of contents of a book. This way you can easily pick up the main ideas so you can focus on the chapters that are more crucial. Use the index to locate key words.

When skimming, read the first sentence of each paragraph. This is usually the topic sentence. It gives you the main idea of the whole paragraph.

Underlining or highlighting sentences are okay. But use this only for the most important ideas.

Jot down quick notes. This is a good mental activity as it makes reading more interactive. You can also refer to the notes later on so you won’t have to read the whole thing again if you need to refer back to it.
