Remove Mildew Smell
Mildew is a common problem in the home. Whether it’s in the rooms, cabinets, bathroom, clothes and towels, mildew can exist especially if the temperature is warm and humid. The best way then to avoid this is to control the moisture in the area.
In the house, areas prone to mildew include the basements, crawl spaces, kitchen, closets, bathrooms and laundry areas. Other areas where mildew is likely to develop are the interior and exterior walls, carpets, papers, books and photos.
Basement. This part of the house should have an exhaust fan to help rid of excess water vapor. Electric heaters may be used in keeping the area dry and moist free. A dehumidifier can also help. Should there be leaks, you can use commercial materials that can keep the area free from water leaks.
Kitchen, bathroom and laundry spaces. These areas are more prone to mildew because of their exposure to water on a daily basis. The ideal way of solving the problem is to install an exhaust fan for proper ventilation of the areas. For bathrooms, let the shower curtain hung for quick drying. Rinse rubber mats and then hang them on the edge of the tub.
Closets. Closets that are not well ventilated can suffer from mildew buildup especially during prolonged humid weather. What you should do then is to open the closet doors every now and then to allow air to circulate inside. The louvered closet doors are ideal as they provide proper air ventilation or you can use small electric heaters meant for closets.
Another way to ensure a dry environment in the closet is to use an electric light. The heat produced by the light will prevent mildew growth notably for a small closet. Normally the light is installed at the top part away from the clothes. Still another tip is to use silica gel to help dry the air. Silica is used in drying flowers. For your closet, you can place it in an open container or in a cloth bag. The silica granules can even be reused.
As for your clothes, just let them hang loosely and make it a point that your clothes are clean and totally dried before putting them inside the closet.
Carpets. Let your carpets get as much as sunshine by opening your draperies, blinds and shades. This will help prevent the growth of mildew.
Towels. In getting rid of mildew and its bad odor in your towels, the solution is no other than the vinegar. First fill your washing machine with the hottest water possible and add one to two cups of white vinegar. Detergent and fabric softener are no longer needed.
Put in your towels into the washing machine and turn on the washer. Leave the towels in the washer but drain the water and vinegar mixture. After that, add hot water again and laundry soap but without the fabric softener and other products. Wash the towels and then dry them by setting the dryer to high. Make sure the towels are dry when you’re done but if not, you can just hang them outside under the sunlight.
