Rip A DVD
You may not have heard about this before but it’s not what you think it is. It’s not about breaking a DVD into pieces. Ripping is a term used in making a backup of a DVD’s content. In short, it means copying the content of a DVD into your computer’s hard drive. This is also done if you want to watch a DVD movie on your computer.
The first thing you need to make sure is that you have the legal rights to copy the DVD to your computer. Remember that copying DVD’s for any purpose is never allowed.
If you’re sure that you are allowed to copy, the next step is to secure a DVD ripping program. There are some websites that offer free ripping software programs that you can easily download. A ripping software should be able to read DVD format, extract digital content and encode it in a file format that your computer can read.
Upon downloading the program, launch it on your PC. Insert the DVD then to your PC’s DVD drive and follow the instructions carefully.
There are many options to choose when it comes to what best DVD ripping tool to use. Below are some of them which you might find useful. It’s only you who can decide which one works the best for your requirements.
- DVD Decrypter. This is a free program that can rip DVDs tearing through copy protection. This has been acquired by Macrovision and is unfortunately, not easily available these days.
- DVD Shrink. This freeware is a decrypter, ripper and compressor in one. Its edge lies in its compression capability. It can compress 8GB dual layer DVDs to a size of only 4GB appropriate for the standard, single layer DVD-Rs. This works in Microsoft Windows.
- HandBrake. This can be used for all types of platforms. It supports iPod, PSPs, Apple TVs, PS3s and many other formats. This free program is fast and easy to use for both ripping and transcoding purposes.
- MacTheRipper. This is ideal for the Mac OS X platform. This one, though, does not encode the ripped content to other formats. It can only rip the DVD menu and the others to your computer’s hard drive.
- DVDFab HD Decrypter. This is a shareware that can go past the copy protection and rip DVDs to your PC’s hard drive. It does not offer any compression tools, though.
