Safe Dog Walking
Here are some tipz on how to walk your dog safely:
Experts say that dogs should be walked using a four to six foot leather leash with a training collar so it can tighten or loosen itself whenever appropriate. If you walk at night, make sure it has a reflective collar and you wear a reflective device too.
Start the walking safely. Make sure that your dog doesn’t bolt out of your door. Train your dog to obey the “wait” command so they won’t charge out (or in) when the door opens.
When walking, walk your dog on a loose leash. Train your dog not to drag you while walking and not to sniff or charge at every pole or tree or or hydrant or person.
Never let your dog piddle on the sidewalk or your neighbor’s property. Always bring a bag and scooper with you just in case your dog decides to move its bowel while you walk it outside.
During the summer, take water with you just in case your dog starts to overheat (panting excessively). During winter, dress your dog in a warm dog sweater and don’t walk too far from home so you can return inside when your dog starts to shiver.
Watch out for mean drivers, mean people, and mean dogs.
