How to Shake Hands Properly

February 11, 2009 | In: Career

Strengthen your credibility by extending your hand for a quick but firm shake. It will do much to establish a good first impression of yourself, especially during a job interview.  A firm handshake symbolizes friendliness and trustworthiness. Without a passable handshake, do not expect a return call.

If your hand is sweaty or greasy, it’s okay to give it a quick swipe.

When you shake other people’s hands, make sure that your palm is parallel to theirs and is perpendicular to the ground. This way, you are saying that you are neutral and equal.

Make your grip firm but not too firm that you make the other person wince in pain or discomfort. A limp handshake might come across as you being a rather weak person, while an extra firm handshake might come across as you being too aggressive. If you are not sure how to do it, practice with your friends.

Don’t forget to pump the hand. Make it quick and firm. Minimum of one and maximum of too should do the trick.

Eye contact is important. Your handshake is useless if you do not meet the eyes of the other person with your own. They might think that you are hiding something.
