Reading is one of the basic skills we’ve learned as kids starting at home. It’s fun thing to do. It feeds the mind, so to speak. With reading, we learn so many things in life. We can even travel to other destinations just by reading and using our imagination.


Not everybody, however, has the same pace when it comes to reading. Some are fast learners and readers while the others take much adjustment to be able to read and comprehend well. But it’s not time to give up yet because there’s a way to improve your reading speed.


Speed reading is the act of reading and understanding written information faster than normal. With so much information being fed to us every day, this is the kind of reading pace many people in this computer age should try to develop. Just imagine, there are so many medium of communication available today that it’s hard to ignore any of them because they’re vital sources of information.


The most essential thing to remember to be able to speed read is to determine the information you want to obtain before you read the entire information. On the internet for instance, isn’t it that we don’t necessarily read everything we see on one web page? Normally, the first thing we search is the news section and then read the headlines. It is only then when we’ve browsed through the headlines that we decide to read further on a certain headline that got our interest.


Busy professionals who use the computer in their work on a daily basis are those who’ve learned the skill of speed reading. This means, one should be able to skim through documents that contain so many details. It’s about getting only the most vital information and absorbing it in your mind.


For people wanting to know the latest news but don’t have the time to watch TV or listen to the radio, one can even just stop for a few minutes at a newsstand while out on the street. You don’t have to buy a newspaper but with speed reading, you can easily scan the front page for the headlines and most important facts written and voila, you now know the big news that took place around the world the previous day.


Practice also makes perfect. From being a child to growing into an adult, we improve on our reading skills. We no longer read word per word but by blocks and we should have learned to comprehend well that there’s no need to go back to what we’ve read in the previous paragraphs or sentences. Concentration and regular eye movement are key factors when speed reading.


For frequent web users, the RSS (really simply syndication) reader is a helpful tool. This tool allows one to speed read numerous headlines and news summaries of top international newspaper sites without having to open several web pages. All you need to do is download the RSS reader and you’ll easily be able to read news and article summaries without the ads and graphics. The great advantage here is that it automatically updates itself with the latest information from various sites so you only need a few clicks.
