How to Stay in a Hostel

keysStaying in a Hostel

Traveling on a budget? Well, one option to keep expenses to a minimum is by staying in hostels instead of hotels. Here are a few things to consider if you would like to opt for this particular lodging:

For one, hostels aren’t exactly like hotels. If you do wish to have the privacy of your own room, then hostels won’t be your cup of tea. Hostels are like dormitories, which means there would be several pairs of bunk beds in a co-ed or separate-gender rooms. Bathrooms and showers are also communal. If you aren’t shy and are quite sociable, then it would be the perfect set-up for you.

However, don’t wince just yet. Hostels do offer private rooms, but they may come at slightly higher prices.

  • Read reviews or testimonials from websites or travel fora. Obviously, you would have to stay away from those with negative reviews.
  • Check with the hostel for bed availability. Make sure that there would be bed (or beds) available when you arrive. Check also the prices of sheets and pillows and if they are included with the nightly rate.
  • Clarify if there is or isn’t a curfew. There are hostels who have them.
  • Check if the hostel has lockers or a secure area where you can store your electronics and other valuables.
  • Make sure that the hostel has common area offerings such as a television viewing room or a kitchen where you can fix your own
  • meal. This will save you money by not having to resort to eating
  • out.
  • Before you travel, pack a sleep sack or your own sheet, just in case you are sensitive about these things. Bring also a pair of earplugs, just in case you have unquiet roommies.

Hostels are not the perfect accommodation, but if you are well-prepared and you know what to expect, they might be a fun and inexpensive alternative to hotel lodging.
