Why is it important to stop mail delivery when you go on a long vacation? A mailbox full of unread mails is like an invitation to would-be burglars to do away with your prized belongings while you’re gone.
There are three ways to stop mail delivery.
The first one is online. Simply go to http://www.usps.com and look for the “receiving mail” pull down menu. Click on the “hold mail” option and a new page will appear. Enter your zip code and click continue. Fill in the necessary fields with the correct information, which includes your address and the date period when you would like your mail delivery to be stopped. Continue entering information until you see the “complete” button. Click it to finish.
The second method is to call the US Postal Service. Call their hotline – 1-800-275-8777 . You will then hear an automated prompt. Press #4 for the option to hold mail. Just follow the prompts. To resume mail delivery, simply call again when you get back from your trip.
The last method is to go to your local post office. This is for those who live near their local post office. Request for form PS 8076. Fill in the correct information, sign the document, and turn it in. You also have the option to mail the form.
