Studying a Foreign Language
Learning a foreign language can be both fun and frustrating, specially if you don’t have the talent in learning new languages. But don’t let this stop you from acquiring a skill that can be advantageous to you in the future. Just study as hard as you can and follow these tips.
Memorize. Write words in small flashcards. Look at each word. Memorize it. Cover it up and then write it down from memory. Seems too elementary for you? Might be, but it certainly helps in embedding the word into your long-term memory.
Some people learn better when they are using their ears. Invest in some language tapes or cds. Use your portable player while you’re on your way to school or work. You can even listen while you are washing the dishes or doing some other chore in the house. Listen over and over. The key here is to train your ears to automatically pick up words in that language.
Get a study buddy. This way, you can practice speaking the language. This is ideal for conversation drills. Take turns in acting out a particular situation, like asking for directions for example. One will ask while the other will answer. When you’re done, you can reverse roles.
Travel. If it is possible. This is the best way to learn a foreign language. Immerse yourself in the culture. You’ll also be able to get the social cues needed to utter particular phrases. Listen and practice the language in its country of origin. You’ll soon pick it up, you’ll see.
