How to Take Care of Rose Plants

A few tips on how to care for your rose plants:
Keep the grafted knob no less than two inches below the soil line when planting new rosebushes.
Prune out winterkill (dead wood when new growth buds begin to swell. Don’t forget to cut tall canes (stems) down to size.
Remove winter protective mulch from the crowns and replace any winter-killed bushes with newer selections.
Avoid rose disease by protective spraying. Ask from your local nurseries for the best spray for your roses. Whatever it is, make sure that it includes the fungicide, “Funginex.” This protects the plants against harmful fungi-caused diseases such as mildew and blackspot.
Lightly cultivate and feed roses. Use about ¼ cup of rose food and trace it in a circle around the base of each plant. Mulch the soil with buckwheat hulls afterwards. This will help keep the weeds away while conserving soil moisture.
If rains are infrequent, you may water the plants weekly. Use a soaker hose as overhead hoses encourages diseases.
