How to Take Essay Exams

March 6, 2009 | In: Education, Self Improvement

essaysWriting essays is one of the most common exam types. This is usually preferred in Humanities courses where you have to discuss your own analyses of readings and texts. Here are some things you need to remember if you’re going to take this type of exam:

Use 1/3 of your time planning and the rest for writing. Planning is crucial. This will determine the flow of your essay.

Read the questions carefully. You are allowed to choose which questions to answer in most essay-type tests. Do the choosing first and be sure to pick the ones that you are most confident in answering.

Underline what you have to do for each question. Common key words are “DISCUSS,” “COMPARE and CONTRAST,” “EXPLAIN” and “EVALUATE.” These will help you narrow down your focus.

Create a topic outline for each question. You can write this at the back of your paper or a scratch paper if you are allowed to have some.

When these are all done, start writing.

Use the best grammar, spelling, and of course, penmanship. Be neat. No matter how excellent your essays are, but if they can’t be read, then all your hard work will go to waste.
