Attending Job Fairs
Job fairs can be overwhelming especially if it’s your first time to attend one. There can be a lot of booths you might wish to check out and of course you can only cover so much. Avoid getting “lost” among the throngs of job seekers and companies. Here are some tipz to help you navigate through the maze:
Don’t waste your time in the queue. To avoid lining up for registration, pre-register. Most job fairs have pre-registration options online or over the phone.
If the job fair has a website, you can peruse it and check which companies and representatives will be participating. Maps of the booths can also be available. Print this out and mark the booths you might want to prioritize. Research on these companies if you can. Some do prelimenary interviews so it’s better to be prepared.
Print out updated resumes and replenish your supply of calling cards. Bring enough copies and keep the neat, smudge-free, and wrinkle-free.
Dress neatly and professionally. However, make sure that you dress for comfort too as you will be on your feet the whole day .
Be punctual. Remember the adage, “The early bird gets the worm?” It holds true even for job fairs. Representatives will also be talking to a lot of job seekers. If you arrive late, they won’t also be at their best. To make sure you get your full advantage, be there early.
Network. Don’t limit yourself to companies. Talk with other job seekers as well. They might offer you valuable insights
If you’ve been asked to contact a representative or another jobseeker, then be sure to follow through. Keep your network fresh and alive
