It’s almost back to school and one can never be prepared for another year of academic work. Try to make it easy this year by following these note-taking tipz. Remember, taking good notes help save time when reviewing for that exam. No more cramming so you can take that extra hour watching your favorite TV show instead.

Listen. Some people cannot multi-task – meaning you cannot listen while writing down notes as well. This is a skill that can be acquired with practice but for now, let’s master the art of listening first. You will find it surprising but listening intently makes you remember things better. Focus your attention to your teachers as they speak. Try to keep that information in your memory and then write it down. Putting things in your own words will test your listening comprehension as well.

Review. Writing things down is only half of the picture. In order to store the information in your brain, you also have to keep it active. Go back to your notes during study time when you get home. You may want to read or research more on several items you find interesting. You may want to add more notes if you want.

Compare. Find other classmates who also take down notes like you do. Compare and contrast your notes with them in a study group. Find and discuss topics and inconsistencies. This will not only help you correct information, but it also makes for a good way to retain more knowledge on a particular subject matter.
