How to Teach Kids How to Count

May 17, 2010 | In: Education, Parenting

Teaching young ones how to count is quite easy enough. If you have no idea where to start, you can check these suggestions out:

Incorporate counting in daily activities. For example, if you’re doing chores such as setting the table, or baking cookies, or sorting clothes, you can count with your kids. When setting the table, you can count first how many spoons or how many forks or how many glasses and plates should be laid out. You can also count how many cookies were baked. Or you can count how many red shirts, or pairs of blue shorts.

You can let your children educational videos which focus on math and counting. There kiddie shows that are interactive and encourage children to count out loud. It is best to sit with your children while they watch.

You can make a game out of it when you go out. You can count how many steps there are in a flight of stairs. You can also count all the green cars that pass by. If you’re grocery shopping, you can ask your kid to get “2 boxes” of sugar.
