How to Tip

Tipping for Take-Outs

Tipping in restaurants is tricky enough, but what about tipping when your food is for take-out or some other instances like if they’re being delivered. Here are some guidelines on how to do exactly that:

Tipping for take-out, like for fast food, is simply not done. You are not obligated to tip the restaurant staff even if you ordered in person or pre-ordered by telephone. The service staff and even their employers will not allow it. You also do not have to tip staff in smorgasbords, buffet houses, and cafeteria-style places where it is self-service.

So where can you tip?

You can certainly tip if food is delivered to you, especially if your place is rather difficult to find, or if you ordered during a bad weather. In those cases, offer a generous tip.

You may also tip hotel room service staff. Although gratuuity is often added to the room bill, it is quite acceptable and very generous of you if you wish to offer additional gratuity.

If you opt to sit at a counter or bar, tipping is still customary, although it can be lower than the high tipping percentage of 15% to 20%.
