Treating Pubic Lice

You can get pubic lice, or crabs, through physical contact, infested toilet seats, and shared towels, linens, and articles of clothing. Although annoying, they do not carry sexually transmitted disease. Here is what you need to do if you do get them:

Inform your sexual partner or anyone else who has shared towels or bedding with you. They may have gotten them also and might need treatment.

There are insecticide solutions for pubic lice which you can buy over the counter. But to be on the safe side, consult a medical professional and get a prescription.

Strip your bed of all bedding and linens. Get all towels and clothing that have come in contact with pubic lice. It doesn’t matter if they are clean or not. Wash them in hot water and dry them in a hot dryer.

If you have non-washable items, you can place them inside a dry and clean plastic bag or garbage bag and seal it very tightly. Leave it for at least 2 weeks. Pubic lice can only live for a maximum of 48 hours away from its host, but nits might take longer.
