Trimming Cat Nails
Keeping your cat’s nails short will help preserve your furniture (and not to mention your skin). Follow these steps on trimming cat’s nails:
Make your cat accustomed to having its paws handled. Everytime you cuddle it, make sure to massage each paw gently.
Get everything ready – cotton balls, styptic powder or baby powder, pet nail clippers, and pet treats. Trim your cat’s nails in a place where there is strong light. This is so you will be able to see what you are trimming.
Place your cat on your lap and gently hold one paw. Using your thumb and index finger, firmly but gently, unsheath the cat’s retractable nails. Trim each nail.
Make sure that you only cut the white part, and not the pink part which is called the quick. It contains nerves and blood vessels which can be painful for your pet when it is cut through. If there is bleeding, apply pressure to the tip and absorb the blood using cotton balls, or styptic powder, or baby powder.
Use soothing words to keep your cat well behaved. You can also give your pet treats after finishing one paw if it stays still.
