Unclogging a Toilet
Like a sink, toilets can be unclogged in just a few simple steps. Why don’t you try it out yourself first before calling the experts? Here’s how to do it:
First, use the toilet as little as possible if you’ve finally noticed that it’s not flushing properly.
Next, you will need a plunger. Make sure that you have the highest-quality plunger in your home. No point in using one if the handle will break with just one plunge. You might also need a plumber’s snake and drain cleaner but these can be optional. Get them ready nevertheless.
Insert the plunger into the toilet. Make sure that the cup of the plunger is fitted over the drain opening. Push down on the plunger handle with firm but careful strokes. Again, be careful. Too violent motion can damage your toilet bowl.
If problem persists, use the plumber’s snake. Use a pair of gloves for this as it tends to get dirty. Insert the end of the snake into the toilet. Turn the handle slowly in a clockwise direction while gently pushing the snake. Make sure that the toilet is filled halfway with water to help with lubrication. By this time, you will feel the clog starting to break up. When the crank becomes difficult to turn, pull out the snake and clean its end. Repeat the process until the drain is clean.
Use the drain cleaner as a last resort. Just remember not to mix chemicals as they might destroy your toilet bowl and pipes.
Flush the toilet a couple of times to check the flow.
