How to Wear Cologne (for Men)

February 20, 2009 | In: Fashion, Men's Fashion

cologneThere are men who are afraid to wear cologne, and then there are those who are too confident. On one hand, you don’t want to smell like a sweaty locker, while on the other you don’t want to smell like a perfume counter either. So what then is the proper way of wearing cologne? When is it acceptable to wear it? Here are some tips to help you guys on this particular dilemma:

Learn which scent is best for the occasion:
Spice (vanilla, cinnamon, etc.) which is perfect for a romantic evening out with your girl.
Woods (sandalwood, rosewood, etc.) which is apt for business occasions and daytime engagements.
Musk (animal-based scents like musk, ambergris, etc.) suits evening activities.
Citrus (lemon, other fruit and blossom based scents) is good for everyday wear.

In simpler terms, spice and musk scents for the evening and woods and citrus scents for daytime.

Do not mix scents. If you plan to wear cologne, then don’t use scented soaps or aftershaves.

Dab very sparse amounts under each ear, on your chin near the throat, and on your torso.  Don’t worry if you can’t smell yourself after applying. That is the trick to it. If you can smell yourself, then you have already put on too much. The smell of colognes intensifies when mixed with your own scent. Even if you can’t smell yourself, the girl sitting next to you surely can.

Remember, choose the right scent. Wear it on the right occasion. Use it sparingly.
