Tic tac toe is a fun and entertaining board game many of us have learned to love for years now. To win in this game, a player only needs to make three symbols in one row whether it’s horizontal, vertical or diagonal. This may be easy to play but it actually requires some strategy in order for one player to win.

A draw can only occur in tic tac toe if all the nine squares are filled up without one of the players making a row with his three X or O. A draw is also called a cat’s game. Achieving a draw is your second option if winning is not possible.

For people playing tic tac toe for recreation, making the moves may not really be well planned. However, the more experienced players usually use different strategies even at the start of the game. And what normally happens is that the first player to make the move ends up the winner. Winning is achievable when one uses the odds for their benefit and then taking advantage of his opponent’s mistakes.

One technique that will most likely make you win is to go first. If you’re lucky to start first, try to use the center square or one of the four corners. On the other hand, if you’re going second and the first player uses one of the corners, go for the center square. If your opponent chooses the center square, go for one of the four corners. From there, you can then do what is best to make you win the game.

Now here’s what will happen when you choose the center square. If the other player picks the corner, you may not win so your option is to make a draw. Lucky for you if the corner is not picked because winning is possible. When it’s your turn, just choose the corner under them. For sure, the other corner will be picked next to block you.

Your next step is to choose the corner in the same row as your second move. This will give them two options for their move but since only one place should be picked, then your chances of winning is really great.

Here are some other strategies to make you win.

  • Start with any corner square then if your opponent uses a corner square, pick either one of the remaining open corner square. If you’ll be blocked, choose the only corner square and your next move should already achieve a three in a row pattern for a win.
  • If the other player starts in a non-center square, pick the center square. Then when two corner squares are occupied, choose any open edge square. You will then be blocked to prevent a win so this ends in a draw.
  • Another option is your opponent picks a non-center square and then you pick the center square, your next move should be to choose the remaining open edge squares. This should force the other player to block you so pick then any corner square bordered by only one symbol of your opponent and you can win in your next move.
