How to Work in a Noisy Environment

February 15, 2010 | In: Career

Do you work in a noisy environment? Do you find it difficult to do your tasks because you get distracted? Here are some tips on how to cope.

Listen to your own choice of noise. If it is not against company policy to listen to music, then why not indulge in it. You can bring your own radio or if you have an mp3 player, then all the better. So as not to add to the noise around you, better bring earphones or headphones as well.

Learn to tune it out. It can be difficult at first, especially if you’re quite new at work. But after a few weeks, you’ll soon find out that you’ve gotten used to to it and have in fact, learned to tune the noise out.

Get to work early or leave the office late. This way, you can do a couple more hours of work in relative peace. This may not be the best way to go about it, but it sure is worth a try.

Speak to your boss about the problem. The noise issue may be caused by only the people in your immediate environment. Your boss can take actions such as talking to the people causing too much noise, or you can be moved to another spot in the office where it is more quiet. Or the boss may even allow you to work part of the time from home.
