Here are some alternative ways in storing fruits and vegetables and maintain their freshnessand crispness.

You can try digging a hole in your backyard, about 18×24 inches. It should be deep enough so that animals won’t come digging into it as well. You can bury root vegetables in them.

You can try canning fruits and vegetables. Just make sure that you have airtight lids and jars which are sterilized so no bacteria can get into them. You can pickle vegetables and cook the fruits in syrup.

You can also try freezing cut up vegetables. Put them in airtight freezer bags. This is the same for fruits. They’ll stay fresh even without preservatives.
