Prevent Sales Losses with Meta Tags and Robots.txt

by TipzMaster on March 12, 2008

If you’re selling a product online and don’t know what this tag looks like.

<meta name=”robots” content=”noindex,nofollow”>

It’s quite possible it’s costing you money.

You see a lot of people make the mistake of not adding this tag to a download page, and if you don’t.. your download page can end up indexed in the Search Engines.

Even worse, if you just upload a PDF to your root directory it can indexed by the search engines.

On another note.. there’s really no need to index certain pages of your site in the Search Engines.. like your privacy policy, contact page or disclaimer. You can actually save a little pagerank by putting the NoIndex No Follow tag on those pages.

So once again.. If you don’t want someone to find a page of yours in the search engines. Add This to the MetaTags above </head>

<meta name=”robots” content=”noindex,nofollow”>

And.. if you don’t want PDF, Video Files or anything you can’t throw a Tag on indexed.. you can deny access via a robots.txt file.

Here’s a good site to learn more about this…
