Windows 7: How to Switch Calculator Modes

November 17, 2009 | In: Computers

Windows 7 CalculatorOne of the improvements to Windows 7 that has now become a personal favorite is the new Calculator. The Calculator has been left unchanged for the previous three version of Windows and for 7, we’re glad it’s almost a complete overhaul.

For starters, it gets a renewed interface which looks like a standard pocket calculator but it becomes more than that. Previously, the only “advanced” option is to switch it to scientific mode to get more calculation options.

Here are a few shortcut keys to help you:

  • Standard (Alt+1) – Switch back to standard mode
  • Scientific (Alt+2) – Switch to scientific mode where you get access to trigonometric calculations.
  • Programmer (Alt+3) – Switch to programmer mode where you get access to number systems including hexadecimal and binary. Yes, it’s specifically built for developers out there.
  • Statistics (Alt+4) – Swicth to statistics mode where you get access to functions for linear regression.
  • Unit Conversion (Ctrl+U) – Adds fields for unit conversions. Pretty handy.
  • Date Calculation (Ctrl+E) – Computes differences between two dates. (Like finding out exactly how old you are today or how much time you have now and the deadline for that deliverable.)
  • Worksheets - Adds other fields for real-world calculations such as for mortgage, lease, and even fuel economy.
  • Basic Configuration (Ctrl+F4) – Switch back to basic configuration.
